I think due to my general love of cupcakes and flowers and nice things, I was asked to create some live visuals to accompany the musical performance of a lovely lovely band called Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring at Latitude Festival 2008. My short film A Short Collection Of Hilary Flamingo’s Dream Vocations was going to be screened directly after the set so it all fitted in snugly.
I asked my good friend Duncan McGonigle to give me a “hand”, well two (ouch, bad joke), and together we came up with a visual choreography that tied in with the lyrics of each song in the playlist and complimented the beautiful flower decorations on stage, acting like a moving mini-theatre backdrop.
A English Country Garden theme dominated: hazy blue sky background, decorative cast iron gate frame, fake flowers (some that glowed!), greengrocer grass, butterflies, pot-pourri leaves, a wicker picnic basket with red gingham blanket, playing cards, drafts, confetti, ping-pong, a toy london red bus and taxi, hand games (thumb wars, one-potato-two-potato etc), cricket, cucumber sandwiches, flowery writing paper, toy horses, telephones….
Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring were then asked to play The Big Chill and add some Velvet Underground songs to their set. We were asked once again to provide the live visual accompaniment, but unfortunately Duncan had to work and I was looking after a kitten in the country side (dreamy)…. So, we filmed a new version, adding in some slow motion footage of sparklers against the flowery background – something we couldn’t do live in a backstage “health and safety” environment – and burnt it onto DVD to run during the band’s show. Here is the video in 5 parts!

[...] I was in a rather meditative state at the time, a little anxious about whether I was leaving myself enough time to make my Gin-Lane-inspired video for Hackney Wicked, and snobbishly nonchalant having been to Latitude Festival last year with the very exciting motive of performing. [...]
